FLEA BEACH

Welcome to Flea Beach, Shirley, BC

Along the waterfront in Shirley, BC, is a small sandy cove known affectionately as Flea Beach.  Located about 1 km to the west of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse site, Flea Beach is popular among local residents as a beautiful spot where you can actually access the ocean.  It has a few tide pools on its edges, a pebble beach, and a sandy intertidal area (exposed when the tide is low).

Flea Beach is not a park or a protected area – rather, it is a Right of Way belonging to the the Ministry of Transportation.

A brief history...

In 2013, the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society sought permission from the Ministry of Transportation to operate and maintain the Right of Way under license.  The first step was to evaluate the status of the property, consulting with Society members, the community and the staff of the Regional Parks Commission, to determine how the site should be cared for.  This resulted in development of a Vision Statement and work plan for the site. To view the Vision Statement, please click here.  To view the work plan, please click here.

Visiting Flea Beach...

If you visit the beach, please keep in mind the following:

  •  The area is small, access is tight, and parking is minimal.  Please be considerate of others.
  • No overnight camping, parking or use is permitted.
  • Please respect the neighbours — the beach and foreshore is located between two private homes, and in the middle of a mature neighborhood.
  • Please keep noise to a minimum.
  • Do not cut, remove, change, trim, mow, cut, or otherwise affect the trees, plants, bushes or  foliage — a comprehensive remediation effort is underway.
  • Help keep the area clean and tidy — pick up your litter and pack out whatever you bring in.
  • Flea Beach is in an urban forest interface area – fires are a concern, no campfires or fires of any kind.
  • NO SMOKING anywhere at Flea Beach
  • ENTER AND USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Thank you for your cooperation and your support.

Flea Beach Conservation Project

Welcome to Flea Beach, Shirley BC.

Summer is in full swing and more and more people are using the MOT Right of Way, called Flea Beach. Under permit from MOT (Ministry of Transportation) the Society has recently successfully removed danger trees identified by an arborist.   Because Flea Beach is a natural setting, and not a maintained park, the Society reminds people who use the beach and the land above the beach, please be careful you are using the site at your own risk.  The hill above the beach is being restored with native plants – and lots of wild grass.  That leads to natural hazards covered by the growing foliage.

Please note and follow the rules for the use of the site:

  • No overnight camping, parking or use.
  • Mind the posted rules – including respect the neighbours, as the beach and land is located between two private homes — and in the middle of a mature neighborhood.
  • No music, keep noise to a minimum.
  • Do not cut, remove, change, trim, mow, cut, or otherwise affect the trees, plants, bushes or  foliage .  A comprehensive remediation effort is underway.  Once completed, there will be, after consultation, planting on the property.

History of the Project

In 2013, the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Society received permission from the Ministry of Transportation to operate and maintain the right of way under license in Shirley, called Flea Beach. One of the first steps the Society took was to evaluate the status of the foreshore property, consulting with Society members, interested parties and the staff of the Regional Parks Commission. Now that process has concluded, and the Society has asked for your ideas, concerns and suggestions about Flea Beach, the results are posted here.

In September of 2014, the Society adopted a Vision Statement regarding the property. A letter, the statement and survey were mailed and emailed to as many residents of Shirley as possible. Thank you to everyone who reviewed the Vision and answered the Society consultation survey.

To view the final approved vision for Flea Beach, please click here.

The Society has completed the consultation and has tallied and reviewed the survey’s comments, suggestions from the website, the open house and returned cards that solicited comments, opinions and advice on the Flea Beach project. Over 25 people attended the open house, 40 emails were received and 35 survey cards were returned.

Please continue to check back to this page for more information and updates on the Flea Beach foreshore property.

On behalf of the entire membership, thank you for your interest in Flea Beach.
