On behalf of all the members of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society, we want to express our sadness, and offer our condolences, on hearing that our friend Pat Carney has passed away.

Since retiring as a Senator, Pat continued to work diligently to support the conservation of Canadian heritage lighthouses and other related heritage structures.  She served for many years on our Board of Advisors (an informal group of knowledgeable people who provide guidance and advice to the Board of Directors as required), and was instrumental in helping to ensure that Sheringham Point Lighthouse received “National Heritage Lighthouse” status.

As a Senator, she led the way for the passage of the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act, then continued to be its champion after her retirement, working with the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada – which recommended the heritage designation of Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and paved the way for its transfer to the Society.

Like many others across the country, we will miss Pat’s sage and forthright advice, her support and fellowship.  We offer our condolences and best wishes to her family and many friends.
